About Me

Journal Entry: Sun Apr 20, 2008, 6:11 PM
I'm really happy to be here on DeviantArt!

I've been a freelance artist since 1978 after studying at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. I started drawing at a really young age and art's always been in my blood!

My commercial work is focused on caricatures, cartooning, and detailed house illustrations for realtors and private homeowners, but I can draw or paint almost anything. I've done many political cartoons, paintings, portraiture, posters, greeting cards, and LP and CD covers. I used to work for a handful of realtors and did over 50 house illustrations for them every week, so I became accustomed to working very quickly with pen and brush. It's no surprise that I still turn work around very quickly!

For the last few years, I have been hired each month to portray the subject of the Q & A column of the "After Dark" newsletter published by Coast to Coast AM. This column focuses on people who investigate paranormal, supernatural, and other unusual phenomena, and it's been great fun to work for them given my interest in old horror and sci-fi movies!

I also offer private art lessons in my studio to people of any age. I focus on comic book art, caricature, cartooning, and traditional animation, but have taught students in a variety of other areas, too. I've also filmed a series of shows called "In the Studio" that appeared on local television, showcasing various art tips and demonstrating how I work.

Starting around 2000, I took my teaching online and now offer lessons to anyone in the world thanks to e-mail and video conferencing. If you're interested in lessons, please contact me anytime!

I'm always open for commissions. Please get in touch if there is a special piece you would like and I'd be happy to discuss it with you. Be sure to check out my web site, also.

Keep drawing!

~Kirk

Working with washes was very hard at 1st.
I remember at A.I.P. one course was in advertising and the teacher showed us how to do a furniture renderings fro the newspaper, using lamp black, washes ,and china white ,and finished it off in 15 minutes. The class just stood there amazed at his skill & speed.
It was 10 week course and i tried over & over to do it like he did but kept failing.
When i got the job working on house renderings they gave me samples of other artists style they wanted done, and i tried everything to match their work. I tried different gray markers and that didn't work....so i kept working with ink & brush till i finally got it down right after a few weeks, but it took me months to get a real feel for washes.
I'd say it took me a year before i got a decent style going, and at least 5 years before i had the skill & speed down like my teacher.
What i really wanted to be a comic book artist like my friend from A.I.P.,Paul Gulacy who went to fame, or a fine art painter, but i fell into the House rendering, and from there into these tight, ink product illustration for newspapers & magazines.
I was freelancing and very busy working long hours, 7 days per week.
I did manage to do a lot of cartooning & illustrations for magazines , and some comic book covers.
Time went by really fast, and this summer i want to have fun and get back into painting large surreal paintings again, and get a Gallery show together.

I just try to draw pictures when I can at this point, but it would be nice to have a part-time job drawing.

I will hopefully have something in my gallery within the next week. If nothing else, I should put up some of my writing until I can scan in some of the drawings and paintings.

Do you enjoy working with washes? I haven't worked with them at this point. Everything I have done has been in graphite alone. I paint in acrylics, but the style is completely different than my drawings. I wish I could merge my detail from the drawings with the emotion from my paintings...

the best way to learn caricatures drawing is just jump right in and start drawing.
Start off just drawing quick sketches of friends & family, and then parties.
Don't worry if they don't look right just try another one.
Try drawing people on TV , or on a DVD for starters.
spend a little time each day just practicing from TV, and do whole pages of people.
look at my sections on "Germany", thats my 1st really quick stuff, and my "bands ", where i drew on the spot drawings.
see, by forcing yourself (and people watching) you get better.

Eli,
I got started in rendering house back in 1978 after i showed my work to to a Realtor, and they hired me.
My work at the time was pretty lame, but they started giving me 20, pictures to draw at "8 x 10" each.
I had a heck of time the 1st few weeks, but finally started to get a handle on it after a month.
i was working in bush & washes really fast.
As the months went on they started asking me if i could do more & more, and before long i was up 50 a week..then 70 & 80...i did 100 a few times but i was really beat.
i was working up to 18 hours per day some weeks.
Thats the way you get good , by jumping in an drawing fast all the time.
It just kinda happens, but it takes a few years to really know what you're doing.

I am impressed with your work since I am new to drawing. I absolutely love the houses and would like to learn more about perspective drawing.

I have drawn from photographs and done a couple of landscapes/buildings. I will hopefully start to get my own gallery going soon. I am waiting for a picture to get back from the framers since it is a gift for my stepfather.

I am seriously impressed with the variety of work you do. How did you get involved with the realtors and selling the pictures to them?

Tam, you're very kind.
thank you!
I'd say the best way to learn caricatures is just get out and draw groups of people at parties,or family gatherings.
See, when pressured you have to work harder.
After I got out college my Pastor ask if i'd donate my time at the Church festival drawing. i was very nervous even though I've been drawing all my life... every caricature i did that night turned out bad, and i walked away feeling really depressed.
I started doing more shows & festivals and finally it started clicking like magic but it took some time.
the short answer is just start drawing all the time and you will find a style.
"keep drawing!"

I also teach online.
